Back Cover Text
H.P. Lovecraft was one of the most well-read authors of his time, and his personal library
constitutes an intimate glimpse into his mind and imagination. This revised and enlarged edition
of the catalogue of his library (first published in 1980) provides comprehensive information on
nearly 1000 books owned by Lovecraft. These books run the gamut of subject matter—from
ancient history to colonial architecture from the history of religion to the history of the secret
service—but focus chiefly on four key areas that Lovecraft found particularly fascinating:
ancient literature and history; the history and antiquities of New England (and specifically of his
native city of Providence, Rhode Island); astronomy, chemistry, and other sciences; and, of course,
the literature of weird fiction, of which Lovecraft was a voracious reader and collector. S.T.
Joshi has supplied full publication information, tables of contents for many titles, data on
Lovecraft’s discussions of the volumes in his stories, essays, poems, and letters, and a
wealth of other information. To know Lovecraft’s mind, one must first know his books.
S.T. Joshi is the leading authority on H.P. Lovecraft. He is the author of the definitive
biography, H.P. Lovecraft: A Life, as well as corrected editions of Lovecraft’s
fiction, revisions, poetry, and miscellaneous writings. He is the author of many critical studies
on Lovecraft, including Selected Papers on Lovecraft and H.P. Lovecraft: The Decline of
the West, and has prepared several editions of Lovecraft’s letters. He has also done work
on Ambrose Bierce, H.L. Mencken, and other authors.
